Policy Director

Cara Cheevers

Cara Cheevers is the Policy Director at One Colorado. Prior to joining One Colorado, she worked for Lieutenant Governor Joseph A. Garcia at Serve Colorado – the Governor’s Commission on Community Service. As Deputy Director of Serve Colorado, she managed a $5 million grant-making process to develop evidence-based AmeriCorps State programs and wrote two multi-year strategic plans to ensure funding effectively met the priorities of local Colorado communities.

She is also a (very) proud AmeriCorps Alum herself. She served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member in the Office of Governor John W. Hickenlooper, during which time she worked on rural housing and homelessness policy, co-authored the first statewide plan to prevent and end homelessness Pathways Home Colorado, and implemented regional, multijurisdictional initiatives house the state’s homeless and vulnerable populations. She also previously served as an AmeriCorps State member, providing direct services to clients at a homeless and emergency food service agency in the San Luis Valley.

Cara holds a Master of Social Work from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, where she studied economic development, public policy, and organizational management from a social justice lens. During her graduate program, she worked on sexuality education and reproductive health rights as an organizer for Planned Parenthood Advocates of the St. Louis Region. A Michigan native, she also holds a Bachelor of Social Work and Bachelor of Spanish Language from Western Michigan University (Go Broncos!). She enjoys cooking and hiking, lives to travel, and spends most of her time with her adopted cocker spaniel, Joe.
