One Colorado, the state’s leading advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Coloradans and their families will honor Trans Awareness Week throughout the week of November 16th-20th, 2020 to help raise the visibility of transgender people, celebrate transgender heroes of history, and address issues facing the community.

"Nearly nine-in-ten adults say they know someone who is gay or lesbian, but less than one-in-three say they know someone who is transgender. Trans Awareness Week is an opportunity to enhance transgender visibility in our communities. When folks see trans people in their daily lives, it creates familiarity and gives young trans and nonbinary people hope of a future of acceptance and success."- Representative Brianna Titone (D- Arvada)“This year we arrive at a Trans Awareness Week unlike any other. The 2020 Election marked the end of an era of vicious attacks from the federal administration against transgender rights and protections. After this huge sigh of relief, we turn our focus to the future by working to reverse the damage from the previous administration, hold our elected officials accountable, and fight for continued progress. Trans Awareness Week is so important this year, not only because of this historic Election, but also because of the additional health risks to transgender individuals posed by the pandemic. Transgender individuals already face disparate health outcomes from social and structural stigma and discrimination, health care access, and financial barriers. We raise awareness this week because change cannot come until the public is educated on the issues facing the trans community.”‍

During the previous administration, transgender Americans faced attacks on issues from healthcare to military bans to housing and shelter guidelines. President-elect Biden has committed to passing the Equality Act within the first 100 days of his presidency, which would reverse many of the rollbacks in federal protections for transgender individuals. One Colorado will work to hold President-elect Biden and US Senator-elect John Hickenlooper accountable to their commitments to pass the Equality Act.Throughout Trans Awareness Week, One Colorado will highlight important issues facing people who are transgender and gender non-conforming, provide resources and information for support, and celebrate the great contributions of transgender heroes of history, which includes youth activists. Friday, November 20th marks Transgender Day of Remembrance.
