One Colorado, the state's leading LGBTQ advocacy organization, released the following statement following the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, in the murder of George Floyd:
Today Derek Chauvin was held accountable for murdering George Floyd, and more broadly speaking, a white police officer was held accountable for murdering a Black man. The verdict is a result of thousands of hours of labor by Black organizers, mothers, activists, clergy, and community members and we are grateful to them. Police accountability is not something we have come to expect in America but is something we must continually fight and advocate for. While we acknowledge the deep relief of this conviction, One Colorado will keep our sights set on using this momentum to further the fight for true justice and equality. One day, guilty verdicts for guilty police officers will be not the exception but the rule, and Black and Brown Americans will not have to live in fear of those who pledged to protect and serve. But until the systems that uphold white supremacy are dismantled, the work for justice will not be over.
