Denver, CO-- One Colorado, the state’s leading advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Coloradans and their families, released the following statement in support of SB20-217 Enhancing Law Enforcement Integrity:
“The vision of One Colorado is very clear: a fair and just Colorado for all. When police violence continues to infringe upon the most basic civil liberties of our fellow Coloradans, it is our duty to speak up and support efforts to address injustice. One Colorado supports SB20-217 to hold police accountable for their actions and to prevent further harm. We believe the measures outlined in this bill are a significant and necessary step to ending the senseless violence against citizens at the hands of the state. Though this bill is a great step forward, we also urge lawmakers to include officers at the state level, leaving no police officer exempt from the regulations outlined in SB20-217.Earlier this week, One Colorado joined more than 300 LGBTQ organizations across the nation to make explicit commitments to embrace anti-racism and end white supremacy, not as necessary corollaries to our mission, but as integral to the objective of full equality for all people, including LGBTQ people. As we enter Pride month, we are reminded of the history of the LGBTQ movement — that Pride began as an uprising against the over-policing of marginalized communities. So as we honor the courage of the Black and brown transgender women who started the LGBTQ movement by standing up against injustice, we stand with Black people fighting for justice today. We stand in support of SB20-217.”
