One Colorado Concludes Statewide LGBTQ+ Education and Organizing Tour With Denver Event
Denver, CO – Since September, One Colorado, the state's leading advocacy organization dedicated to advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) Coloradans, has been traveling the state on a fifteen stop education and organizing tour with LGBTQ+ community members and their allies. On November 2, the tour will arrive in Denver with an event at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall Collaborative, 525 Santa Fe Drive. The event will be open to the press.
“We’ve traveled from Colorado Springs to Ft. Collins, Salida to Gunnison, to Aurora, and many places in between," said Nadine Bridges, MSW (she/her), One Colorado Executive Director. “Across the state, we heard similar themes: Colorado has the most protections for the LGBTQ+ community in the nation and yet, at a local level, there’s still more work to be done. While we have a lot to celebrate, we cannot escape or ignore the increased attacks on our community, especially our transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive community members. Our communities, on the Western Slope, live their lives with pride and courage. They are committed to fighting against the anti-LGBTQ+ narratives they face to live their lives wholeheartedly and authentically. We must continue to work together to ensure that all LGBTQ+ Coloradans are protected and can thrive.”
Major concerns cited across the state included out-of-state attacks on gender-affirming care for trans, non-binary, and gender-expansive people; the future of marriage equality in Colorado should the U.S. Supreme Court reverse the federal right to marry, and the potentially far-reaching of the “303” case in which the Supreme Court found a Colorado website designer could deny her services to LGBTQ+ people.
“In addition to these overarching concerns, we heard tremendous gratitude, hope and a readiness to organize for a brighter future,” said Maria Ignacia Miranda Santis (she/her), One Colorado Political and Organizing Director for Strategic Initiatives. “People are getting out the vote for local school board races and other elections that are going to affect their rights, and we are continuing to organize to keep our communities safe.”
In addition to local members member of the LGBTQ+ community, the Denver event will be attended by
- Rep. Brianna Titone, HD27
- Talayla Banks, AKA Sunlight Quartz
- Nadine Bridges, One Colorado
“The freedom to marry is in jeopardy in Colorado,” said Susy Bates (she/her), One Colorado Campaign Director. “A ban on same-sex marriage is enshrined in the Colorado Constitution. If the Supreme Court overturns the federal right to marriage equality, this discriminatory ban would come back into effect, stripping away LGBTQ+ people’s right to marry in Colorado. We would join a list of 32 states where members of our community would not be protected. LGBTQ+ Coloradans and their families could not rely on the benefits of marriage and would not have the freedom to marry the person they love.”
