One Colorado Education Fund Releases Guide for Working with Transgender Students
One Colorado Education Fund is proud to release “Guidance for Educators Working with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Students.”Written in collaboration with the Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB), the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE), and the Colorado Education Association (CEA), this document provides practical guidance and resources to school districts, educators, and school communities working with and meeting the needs of transgender students. Specific areas addressed in the guide include:
- Restrooms and locker rooms
- Names and pronouns
- Dress code
- Policies on nondiscrimination, bullying, and harassment
- Working with families
- Privacy at school
- Official records
In 2008, legislation was passed which barred discrimination based on sexual orientation, including transgender status. Though legal requirements applicable to schools were a part of the legislation, there was little guidance available to schools. This resource begins to fill that gap and is essential toward understanding the requirements of the law, given the statistical likelihood that each school district will have transgender employees or students.“Guidance for Educators Working with Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Students” is available for download here.
