This morning, U.S. Senator Cory Booker released emails from Brett Kavanaugh from his time as a lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, which revealed a number of the Supreme Court nominee’s views that had previously been unknown to the public. Among quotes revealing his view that Roe v. Wade is not “settled law” is his opposing discrimination protections in creating an Office of Native American Affairs within the Small Business Administration:

‍“The desire to remedy societal discrimination is not a compelling interest.”

One Colorado, the state’s leading advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer Coloradans and their families, released the following statement from Executive Director Daniel Ramos in response to this revelation:

“In June, Justice Kennedy wrote in the 7-2 majority Masterpiece decision that ‘The laws and the Constitution can, and in some instances must, protect gay persons and gay couples in the exercise of their civil rights’. That decision upheld Colorado’s nondiscrimination laws protecting LGBTQ Coloradans and it is incredibly disturbing to see the stark difference in attitudes between Brett Kavanaugh and the man whose seat he is hoping to fill on the Supreme Court,”

‍said Ramos.

‍“Between this opinion, and the fact the White House has intentionally withheld thousands of pages of documents from Kavanaugh’s past, we are calling on Colorado’s Senators Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner to stand with LGBTQ Coloradans and vote ‘No’ on Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation. We have stated all along that if it were revealed that Kavanaugh is hostile to the protection of LGBTQ equality, he would not be a suitable replacement for Justice Kennedy. That much has been confirmed today,”
