One Colorado Statement on National Voter Registration Day
Denver, CO -- One Colorado, the state’s leading advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) Coloradans and their families, issued the following statements from Executive Director Daniel Ramos and Organizing Manager Sarah Smith for National Voter Registration Day.
“In the 2018 elections, just over 84 percent of One Colorado’s registered voters turned out to vote - a full 20 percent more than the statewide average. We know that pro-equality voters are engaged with and participate in elections. One Colorado is working to ensure that all of our supporters are registered and have updated their registration information as needed.”Daniel Ramos, Executive Director, One Colorado.
“Despite making significant progress in recent years, members of the LGBTQ community are still facing steep barriers in achieving true equality. One of the easiest and most significant ways of dismantling these barriers is to ensure that pro-LGBTQ candidates are elected to public office, which we can simply achieve by voting and encouraging our loved ones to vote.”Sarah Smith, Organizing Manager, One Colorado.
Colorado had one of the nation’s highest turnout rates in 2018 among its voting-eligible population at 64.92 percent.
The goal of 2019 National Voter Registration Day is to increase participation by encouraging Americans to register to vote and come out to the polls in November of 2019, and every election after. As a nonpartisan “holiday” for democracy, National Voter Registration Day counts on thousands of partners and volunteers across the political spectrum. Started in 2012 for the presidential election, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right – the right to vote. One Colorado is proud to partner with National Voter Registration Day to encourage LGBTQ Colroadans and their families to make sure their voter registration is active and up-to-date.
Americans can register at hundreds of events across the nation and online at www.NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org. Supporters can also follow National Voter Registration Day activities through social media on September 24th, 2019 by searching the hashtag #NationalVoterRegistrationDay.
